Public Safety
Safety and Security has become more and more of a concern to residents. A good majority of that crime is connected to the drug crisis that has taken the country by storm. There will be a cost that goes along with this, but many residents have stated they are willing to pay for it if it keeps them safe.
Regina is currently short as many as 40 police officers to properly police our city and protect residents. To move to a more active policing system, an increase in the number of officers will have to be met. Along with officers, the city would need more precincts so that police would be more active in their assigned communities. These precinct buildings do not have to be new buildings, as existing fire stations could be used for this purpose. This would mean that fire stations would now become Emergency Service Stations.
In order to achieve our goals, there will have to be collaboration between the police, firefighters, and city Councillors. This will not be an easy task, and will take time.
Hiring police officers is not enough to take on the drug crisis that is causing the rise in crime. Councillors and community leaders need to step up and get to the source of the problem so that they can help the people that are affected.
The City of Regina has many different organizations that are helping at-risk residents, including two police budget-run programs, but more needs to be done to address the growing crisis.
